What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?
For the purpose of describing OT occupation refers to any meaningful and purposeful activity. That “meaningful and purposeful” activity could be many things. Some examples are:
- Regaining full motion after a rotator cuff surgery to be able to reach into a cupboard.
- Being able to bath oneself while maintaining hip precautions after a hip surgery
- Being able to dress oneself after having a stroke.

Occupational therapists help people do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). (www.AOTA.org)

Occupational therapy services at Integrative include:
Strengthening and/or stretching program to regain function (post surgical or otherwise).
- Development of a home exercise program.
- Postural retraining.
- Recommendations for adaptive equipment and training in its use.
- Guidance and education for the patient.
- Guidance and education for family members and caregivers.

“Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team”. (www.AOTA.org) Together with a physical therapist, we can help you to reach your goals to return to prior your functional level, or better.

What types of patients may we see?
Here are a few of the reasons a person might see an OT. There are many other reasons or diagnosis in addition to these for which someone might seek an OT.
- Post surgical shoulder rehabilitation
- Frozen shoulder rehab
- Adaptive equipment after hip surgery
- Fall prevention/balance programs
- Stroke rehab
- Traumatic brain injury rehab

How does it all happen?
When you receive occupational therapy services at IPT you receive an individualized evaluation. During the evaluation the therapist will communicate with you to help clarify what your goals are. Then a personalized treatment plan will be developed specific toward your needs and goals. A team approach is always adopted with you the patient, the OT, and the MD all monitoring your progress towards those goals.
